I'm Paola, and this is one of my favorite day trips to organize for our guests at Casa Aloha — a full day of nature, birds, a canoe ride with a Wayúu guide, a fresh local lunch and an afternoon on the beach. Here's everything you need to know, and how to book it directly with us.


What is the flamingo tour?


This is a complete, organized day trip to the Los Flamencos Flora and Fauna Sanctuary in Camarones, one hour north of Palomino in La Guajira. It's not just a stop to look at birds — it's a full experience run by a local operator we partner with, combining the sanctuary, a canoe ride, birdwatching, a regional lunch and a relaxed beach afternoon by the sea.


Your day, step by step


  1. Departure from Palomino. We pick you up in Palomino and head north along the Caribbean coast toward Camarones.

  2. The sanctuary and the flamingos. At Los Flamencos you take a canoe ride on the Navío Quebrado lagoon, guided by a Wayúu guide from the local Indigenous community. This is where you'll see the pink flamingos, along with many native and migratory birds in their natural habitat.

  3. Birdwatching at Mar Azul. Next you head to Mar Azul, right on the beach, where feeders attract one of the region's most sought-after endemic birds — the beautiful Vermilion Cardinal (Rey Guajiro), along with species like the Guajiran Saltator, Crested Caracara and hummingbirds.

  4. Local lunch by the sea. Enjoy a typical regional lunch from the seafront viewpoint — fresh catch of the day, grilled chicken, or friche, celebrating La Guajira's coastal cooking.

  5. Beach afternoon. Relax in hammocks (chinchorros) and enjoy a free afternoon on the beach before heading back.

  6. Return to Palomino.


Camarones is the perfect full-day plan from Palomino. It's more than just seeing flamingos — it's a beautiful day out, a chance to connect with local Wayúu culture and to discover a completely different landscape. This is where the famous La Guajira desert begins, so the scenery shifts from jungle and sea into something wilder and more open. You come back with the feeling of having seen another side of Colombia.

Good to know


The flamingos are migratory birds, so their numbers change through the year depending on the rainy season — some months you'll see many, others fewer. Ask us and we'll tell you honestly what to expect around your dates. Bring cash, sun protection, a hat, water and a camera or binoculars. This tour runs with a minimum of 2 people.
